I was invited to attend the Windang Family Fun Day as part of the i98 Camp Quality Convoy For Kids It was the first time that Windang had hosted the event which locals Nadene Ryan and friend Jessica Burton organised after Nadene's sister Hailey had been diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma the year before. Windang had always been a popular location to wave at the truck drivers as they travelled along Windang Road, Windang on their way to the Family Fun Day at Albion Park They decided to make the most of the annual turnout and asked the general manager of the Lake Illawarra Hotel, Steve Hampton if they could hold a fundraising event at the popular Windang hotel, and he quickly agreed. With the help of local businesses, friends and family the first annual Camp Quality Convoy for Kids  Windang Contributors Family Fun Day   was born.

One of the many people to volunteer their time was local Belinda Harkness from the Windang and Southern Suburbs Forum who raised awareness of the event via a Facebook events page. Many others helped with the event including organising the donating of auctions and raffle prizes as well as signing up six bands to perform for free to entertain the crowds. Australian country music star Rick Caballo, fresh from the USA accepted Belinda's invitation to perform on the day and was a firm favourite with the crowd. Belinda Harkness acted as MC sang with the Mountain Jam band and supported Rick Caballo with vocals. Other bands who performed included Happy DazeMustardBiig Willie and The Backburners

The Master Builders Club donated a FORD Precision Racing Jacket & Signed VB racing helmet. and Matt Cooper donated his team shorts which raised over $300 with the winning bidder the management of the Lake Illawarra Hotel after a heated bidding war. Over $7000 was raised with donations and sales of cupcakes, candles, face painting, amusement rides and donations collected along Windang Road during the convoy.

Bryce Courtenay Facebook fan club lunch

E-mail Print PDF

Meeting Bryce was a very unexpected joy which has left me overwhelmed. The experience of a lifetime to meet the wonderful Bryce Courtenay and share lunch with Bryce and eight of his Facebook fans who were lucky enough to win a competition on Bryce's Facebook page which asked 'what was your favourite book' and 'why do you want to meet him'. The chance to have lunch with Bryce to celebrate the launch of his latest book propelled me to write a heartfelt email that flowed as a stream of consciousness, rushed and not edited as I had only noticed the competition the night before it was due to close. When I received an email on my mobile phone's gmail (email) application a few days later to say that I had been chosen as one of the eight Sydney winners I couldn't believe my good fortune.

Viva La Gong, 2009

November 7th, 2009

MacCabe Park, Wollongong

A highlight of my year is the Viva La Gong celebrations, Wollongong’s Multicultural festival celebrating the diversity and talents of Wollongong and the greater Illawarra.

This year I didn’t make it to the street parade but spent the afternoon in MacCabe Park, Wollongong. It was a really bright and sunny day and there was a real party atmosphere with colourful Circus WOW and Circus Monoxide, great music by Lior and other artists.

There were many food tents offering delicious morsels which kept the party atmosphere alive.

The Portugese Kitchen selling portugese chicken burgers, bacon and egg roll, marinated steak roll and chorizo burgers was popular. I settled on a portugese chorizo roll (minus the roll) at $6. It was most definitely spicy and packed a lot of flavour!

Another popular stall was the Turkish Gozleme, a savoury traditional Turkish hand made and hand rolled pastry. Fresh pastry is rolled out, filled and sealed, then cooked over a griddle. The name derives from the Turkish word göz meaning eye.

Often served with fillings such as spinach and fetta or ricotta. Delicious with a squeeze of lemon.

After lunch I dragged a chair over to the Circus Monoxide area and watched children of all ages learning Circus tricks. There were several circus people making their way around MacCabe Park on stilts, inviting people to take part in the workshop.
