Tutorial - Fringing

fringingIf you have taken a photo in low light you may have noticed a halo or fringing to your photos.

I first noticed them with my macro flower photography. There is a way to reduce fringing using Adobe Photoshop's Hue Saturation.

1. Use the lassoo tool to select the affected area

2. Select Hue/Saturation from the Image > Adjustments menu as shown in the screen capture below

image > hue saturation

3. Once the Hue / Saturation dialog box appears select Blues from the Edit> dropdown list and move the slider for Saturation and Lightness to the left hand side.

4. Repeat with Cyan or (in some cases Magenta) if needed. You can see on the right hand side that the fringing is now gone.

This tutorial works best with darker backgrounds. For white backgrounds move the Saturation slider to the left and Lightness to the right. That will make the saturation of the blue or cyan low and the lightness high. You can then select any areas which contrast with the background and edit them manually or delete.
